The Meteor Mile is a relatively recent addition to the Almost Athletes' race calendar. Taking place at Gloucestershire Airport, near Staverton, on a Saturday evening at the beginning of September, it uses the main runway and section of support road, with the runway lights on against the setting sun.
The race starts at 7.45pm, with the race briefing taking place outside the terminal building a good 20 minutes beforehand, allowing time for the runners to make their way to the far end of the airport for the Start; the airport courtesy car proving both a lead and some inspiring tunes!
The first 300 metres are along the support road before a right turn places you onto the runway itself with a 1k-plus dash towards the terminal. Peeling off to the right, the runners take on the final 200 metres to the Finish, adjacent to the terminal building. Chip timing was introduced to the event last year and this will be used going forward.
Whilst competitive, the social and inclusive nature of the race is paramount, with children encouraged to take part. Every finisher receives a bespoke medal, and prizes are awarded for the first male and female adult and junior (U15) finishers. As hosts, Almost Athletes also awards prizes to the first male and female club finishers.
The Aviator bar is the venue for the prize giving and is a great place to wind down, refresh oneself and socialize after the run.

After a chilly but bright start on the athletics track of Tilsley Park, the Abingdon marathon got underway with close to 800 competitors. A good representation of Almost Athletes were in attendance, including 6 members of the same running family putting sibling rivalry to the test.
