Thursday Evening Running Sessions

– some information from Michael Grant.

Hello everyone,

I first started coaching these earlier this year and would like to explain briefly what we do & why.

Both Tuesday & Thursday evening sessions are for mixed ability runners. On a Thursday we run a series of intervals, for example a 4-minute run, done 4 times, followed perhaps with a 3-minute run, done 4 times. Another example would be pyramids – a 1-minute run then increasing by 1 minute to 5 then decreasing by 1 minute back down to a run of 1 minute. Recovery times vary and are never designed to “flog the runners” so that they end up on their knees exhausted!

We run for longer than a “typical track session” and are measured in minutes rather than say distance – 100, 200 400 metre runs.

They are NOT for runners looking to improve their short distance sprint speed; were that the case the routines would typically be shorter with longer recoveries.

These interval-based sessions benefit longer distance running which is so popular for the runners in our running club – be it personal training runs or races of say, 10k and upwards.

I hope this helps in understanding the nature of the Thursday sessions – they are not all about “speed”!

Thank you

Michael
